Private assigned to Engine 34, collapsed with an apparent heart attack while fighting a fire at the Slaughter Brothers Lumber Company at 4341 Old Lamar Avenue at 9:55 p.m. on December 19. 1982. The engine company had been working at the fire scene for more than six hours. Charles Vinson, 41, had been with the department for five years. He was married and the father of two children.
