Joseph Hiskey

Driver assigned to Engine Co. 5, was injured while fighting a fire at Front Street and Union Avenue at 1:00 a.m. The fire damaged a number of businesses, including the Memphis Cold Storage Warehouse, the Oliver-Finnie Grocer Company, the Memphis Paper Company, and the Cudahy Packing Company. Hiskey was injured in the early stages of the fire, when he was running in an alley in the darkness and fell through a grating some 22 feet into an excavation below the buildings. He was taken to City Hospital, where he died. Joseph Hiskey, 34, had been with the department for over four years. He was married and the father of five children.
