Lieutenant assigned to Engine 7, was one of two firefighters who died while fighting an arson fire at the Regis Towers Apartments at 750 Adams Avenue at 2:10 a.m. on April 11, 1994. Mathis, while searching for fellow firefighters, was apparently caught in a flashover that damaged his breathing apparatus. He was found unconscious in a ninth-floor apartment and transported to the Regional Medical Center where he died. Larry Mathis, 38, had been with the department for seventeen years. He was married and the father of two daughters.
