"Spotters Save Christmas"

The Fire Museum of Memphis Celebrates 25 Years of Service with the Release
of “Spotters Save Christmas.”

Christmas is said to be "The most wonderful time of the year," but there are
many dangers that hide behind flashing lights and fancy decorations. The National Fire
Protection Association estimated that "About 45,000 electrical fires occur in residential areas
annually. Nearly 40% of all Christmas fires are linked to electric lights and candles. It takes
seconds for a tree to ignite and cause a deadly fire." One small bulb can cause an inferno that’s
nearly impossible to stop with a basic household extinguisher. "It's devastating when a family
finds themselves homeless on Christmas because their tree caught on fire, that's why fire safety
is critical. Our mission is to educate the community about fire prevention," said Fire Museum of
Memphis' Executive Director, Kimberly Crafton.

The Fire Museum of Memphis has been promoting the significance of fire safety and prevention
for nearly three decades. The Fire Museum had its 25th Anniversary in October and now
museum staff are celebrating this occasion by launching a new children's book, Spotters Save
Christmas. This is an adventurous tale of how four heroic dogs save Christmas by identifying
dangers lurking behind every turn at the North Pole. The Fire Museum of Memphis hosts an
annual Breakfast with Santa event, which includes storytelling activities. Executive Director,
Kimberly Crafton and Fire Education Specialist, Patricia Belt saw this as an opportunity to
educate families on ways to identify fire hazards that happen, during the holidays. The concept
of Spotters Save Christmas was born!
