Old Fire Station Number 1 is at 118 Adams Avenue, Memphis, TN 38103. It was built in 1910 and sits
next door to the original Memphis Police Department building, which was built in 1911 at 128 Adams
Avenue. It served as Fire Engine House No. 1 from 1910 until 1973, when the station was closed and the
apparatus moved to new quarters at 211 Jackson Avenue. After 1973, the building was used by the
Memphis Police Department as an evidence storage facility and also as the Traffic Violations Bureau.
The City of Memphis maintained ownership, and, in 1998, the building was placed on permanent loan to
the Fire Museum of Memphis. The building's front showcases two bright red arched doors where
apparatus was originally pulled from the building by horses, and later, motorized apparatus was driven
out. During its time as an active fire station, it housed Engine 1, Truck 2, and the Battalion 1 District
Chief. Also, from 1966 to 1968, Engine 9 was housed here during the construction of a new, modern
headquarters facility at Front and Union. In October of 1998, old Fire Engine House No. 1 was opened
as the Fire Museum of Memphis.
