Former Fire Station No. 1 was located at 211 Jackson Avenue. It was in service for 50 years, from 1973
until May of 2023. At that time, the building was demolished and the property given to St. Jude
Children's Research Hospital. In return, St. Jude built a new Station 1 at 235 Chelsea Avenue, just north
of downtown. That new station opened in April of 2023. Fire Station 1 at 211 Jackson Avenue, over the
years, housed Engine 1, Engine 4, Truck 2, Snorkel 2, Battalion 1 District Chief and the Division 1
Division Chief. It also housed the Elvis Presley ambulance for many years after it was removed from
service. The station was rather large, with 3 overhead bay doors.
